چکیده

Mastitis is a common infectious disease in dairy cattle, and is among the most economically damaging animal health problem producers face. Mastitis in dairy heifers is recognised as a distinct problem from that in older cows because of the different pattern of disease (Barkema, Schukken et al. 999; Valde, Lawson et al. 004) and unique factors that determine its occurrence (Waage, Sviland et al. 998; Waage, Odegaard et al. 00 ). Data from New Zealand (Compton, unpublished) shows that heifers have amongst the highest age-specific incidence of clinical mastitis (CM) (up to 5%) and that the largest majority of cases are diagnosed in the first to weeks of lactation. Other NZ data (Compton, unpublished) shows that intramammary infection (IMI) between and weeks pre-calving is common but is not as high as at calving. But no data is available to define when most new infections occur pre-calving or what factors may be associated with them. Knowledge of both these factors is important for developing control programmes for heifer mastitis.

Effect of prepartum intramammary treatment with pirlimycin hydrochloride on prevalence of early first-lactation mastitis in dairy heifers.

OBJECTIVE To determine whether prepartum intramammary treatment of dairy heifers with pirlimycin hydrochloride would reduce the prevalence of intramammary infection (IMI) and lower the somatic cell count (SCC) during early lactation or improve 305-day mature equivalent milk production. DESIGN Prospective clinical trial. ANIMALS 183 Holstein-Friesian heifers (663 quarters) from 2 dairy farms...

Effect of Restricted Grazing in Early Lactation on Milk Production from Dairy Heifers

Dairy heifers had an estimated grazed pasture intake of either 11.8 (H) or 6.0 (L) kg DM/heifer/day for four weeks in early lactation and a common pasture allowance thereafter. Group L produced less milk (2202 vs. 2433 R) and milk protein (75.0 vs. 81.6 kg) than Group H in 31 weeks but milk fat yield (104.9 vs. 109.8 kg) and milk composition were not significantly affected. All heifers lost bod...

Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Strategies for Controlling Mastitis in Heifers During the Periparturient Period

Intramammary infections (IMIs) in unbred and pregnant dairy heifers were once thought to be very infrequent. However, during the last 2 decades, several studies have shown that IMIs in heifers occur frequently during the prepartum and peripartum periods. Many of these infections can persist for long periods of time, may be associated with elevated somatic cell counts (SCC), and may impair mamma...

Winter grazing system and supplementation of beef cows during late gestation influence heifer progeny.

A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used to evaluate effects of dam winter grazing system and supplementation in the last third of gestation on subsequent BW gain, feed efficiency, and reproduction in heifer progeny. Crossbred cows (yr 1, n = 109; yr 2, n = 114; yr 3, n = 116) grazed range (WR) or corn residue (CR) during winter and within grazing treatment received 0.40 kg/d of 31%...

Mastitis in Heifers: Prevalence, Strategy for Control during the Periparturient Period, and Economic Implications

Intramammary infections in breeding age and pregnant heifers are much higher than previously thought. Many of these infections can persist for long periods of time, are associated with elevated somatic cell counts, and likely impair mammary development during gestation and affect milk production after calving. Prepartum intramammary antibiotic infusion of heifer mammary glands a few weeks befor...
